Transform your Hilux into the ultimate expedition vehicle. We provide a series of Toyota Hilux rooftop tent options - each tested for the specific roof load capacities and mounting configurations of the Hilux Revo, Vigo, and Champ. Whether you are mounting above the cabin or over the load bed, this guide covers everything you need to make the right choice.
The Toyota Hilux is one of the world's most capable and reliable pickup trucks. Its combination of a strong ladder-frame chassis, a spacious load bed, and widespread global availability makes it a natural base for overlanding builds. However, mounting a rooftop tent on a Hilux requires careful consideration of roof load ratings and installation method.

The EDGE Overland Horizon Mini is the most practical option for Hilux owners mounting above the cabin, or for those seeking a compact bed-rack installation. At 65 kg with a closed footprint of 150 × 120 cm and a closed height of just 25 cm, it is well-suited to the Hilux Revo’s cabin dynamic load rating. Once open, it provides a 230 × 145 cm sleeping area with a 5 cm dual-compound mattress.
The EDGE Overland Explore One is an excellent match for Hilux bed-rack setups, where higher load ratings allow heavier and more feature-rich tents. At 70 kg with a closed height of just 18 cm, it offers an exceptionally low profile on the road. Inside, the 7 cm dual-compound mattress and 160 cm interior standing height deliver exceptional comfort.
The EDGE Overland Horizon One provides the largest sleeping area in the EDGE Overland lineup – 230 × 205 cm – making it ideal for families or groups on extended Hilux-based expeditions, when installed on a rated bed rack. At 90 kg, it requires a load bed installation to remain within safe load limits.
Mounting on the cabin roof keeps the load bed completely free for cargo, tools, or additional gear. However, the dynamic roof load limit of the Hilux cabin is relatively modest. A suitable crossbar or rack system that distributes load across the cabin's fixed mounting points is required. Due to the load restrictions, lighter hard-shell tents are the most practical choice for this installation.
Key consideration: The cab's dynamic load limit while driving is approximately 75 kg on the Revo and 50–75 kg on the Vigo. Always verify limits in the vehicle owner's manual and factor in the combined weight of the rack system and tent.
The load bed is the most popular mounting location for Hilux owners. A quality bed rack or reinforced hard-top system transfers load through the vehicle's body structure, allowing for significantly higher static and dynamic load ratings. This installation also lowers the center of gravity compared to a cabin-roof mount, which improves stability on uneven terrain.
Note: Values are approximate and may vary depending on equipment level and the roof rack system used. Always consult the vehicle owner's manual before installation.
Verdict: For the Toyota Hilux, particularly in regular overlanding or off-road use, a hard-shell tent is typically the more practical choice due to its durability, fast setup, and aerodynamic advantage during long-distance travel.

These features are particularly relevant for Hilux owners who regularly encounter:
Choose the EDGE Overland rooftop tent that best suits your Hilux configuration:
Do I need a special roof rack for the Toyota Hilux?
In most cases, yes. The standard factory roof rails, where fitted, are not designed to handle the point loads of a rooftop tent. A suitable crossbar system or bed rack that attaches to the Hilux’s fixed mounting points is required. For cabin-roof mounting, brands such as Rhino-Rack, Thule, Front Runner Outfitters, and Yakima offer compatible solutions. For load-bed mounting, a purpose-built steel or aluminum bed rack is the most reliable approach.
How does a roof tent affect fuel consumption on the Hilux?
A rooftop tent increases aerodynamic resistance, which adds to fuel consumption. With a hard-shell tent from the EDGE Overland range, the additional fuel consumption is estimated at approximately +0.5–1 L per 100 km. Soft-shell tents, which present a larger closed profile, typically result in a greater increase of +1–2 L per 100 km. Actual figures vary with driving speed, rack configuration, and specific tent model.
Can I still drive off-road with a roof tent on my Hilux?
Yes. Hard-shell rooftop tents are specifically designed to handle off-road vibration, trail debris, and variable terrain. However, any tent mounted on the cabin roof raises the vehicle’s center of gravity, which increases body roll in tight corners and on side slopes. A bed-rack installation mitigates this by keeping weight lower and more centrally distributed. Driving at appropriate speeds for the terrain and securing all tent latches before driving are recommended practices in all cases.
Can I leave my bedding inside the tent when closing it?
Yes. All EDGE Overland hard-shell tents are designed to fold with bedding left inside. Bedding should be arranged as flat as possible to allow the shell to close fully. Very bulky items such as oversized pillows or thick winter duvets may need to be removed or repositioned.
Is it possible to mount solar panels on an EDGE Overland rooftop tent?
Yes. Roof bars are available as an optional accessory for the Horizon One, Horizon Mini, and Explore One. These bars mount on top of the closed tent shell and can be used to carry solar panels, traction boards, and other equipment.
