The Jeep Gladiator occupies a unique position in European overlanding. It is the only modern Jeep built as a genuine pickup truck, combining Wrangler-level off-road hardware with a separate cargo bed that changes how an overland build comes together. As a rooftop tent platform, it offers something no other Jeep does: the choice between mounting over the cab or over the bed. That decision shapes everything else in the build, and it is the first thing to settle before selecting a tent or a rack.
The Gladiator was sold in Europe between 2021 and 2023 — exclusively with the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 (194 kW / 600 Nm), in Sport, Overland, 80th Anniversary, and Launch Edition trims, and finally as the FarOut Final Edition before the model's definitive end of sales in Q4 2023 as part of Jeep's European electrification roadmap. A significant number of European Gladiators are now in circulation, and this guide is written for owners building overlanding setups on those vehicles.

All EDGE Overland hardshell rooftop tents are aluminium models with Raptor-style coating, 4000 mm water resistance, and fast one-person setup. Compatibility on the Gladiator depends entirely on mounting location — cab or bed — and the closed footprint of each tent relative to those surfaces.
The Gladiator arrived in Europe as Jeep's return to the pickup segment after decades away, combining the Wrangler's off-road architecture with genuine cargo-carrying ability. For overlanding, that combination is genuinely valuable: the separate cargo bed allows a clean split between where you sleep and where you store everything else, in a way that no other Jeep can offer.
The European specification is uniform: 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6, 8-speed automatic, 4WD with low range, ladder frame, solid front and rear axles. European technical data for the relevant specification lists a wheelbase of about 3,488 mm and an overall length of about 5,591 mm. Compared with a Wrangler, the Gladiator's longer wheelbase can add stability under load but also makes it a noticeably larger vehicle on tight Alpine trails or in historic European city centres. That size is the trade-off for the bed.
Mounting a hardshell rooftop tent over the cab leaves the bed free for gear, tools, and storage. On a Gladiator, that open bed is a primary reason to own the truck rather than a Wrangler, so preserving it is a legitimate priority.
The structural constraint is significant. The Gladiator owner's manual states a total dynamic roof load limit of 45 kg including the rack itself (see OEM Roof Load Rating below), so no EDGE Overland hardshell tent is viable on standard hardtop crossbars or a gutter-mount rack. The fibreglass hardtop panels are the limiting element.
For a cab-mounted EDGE tent, the relevant alternative is a structurally reinforced aftermarket crossbar or support system that transfers load through stronger vehicle structure and is specifically rated for the complete travelling load; the exact system rating, installation method, bar spacing and mounting geometry must be followed.
For cab mounting, Horizon Mini is the cleanest EDGE choice. Its 150 × 120 cm closed footprint and 65 kg weight make it substantially easier to package over the cab than Explore One or Horizon One. Explore One and Horizon One are better positioned as bed-mounted options.
Weight on the cab roof sits forward of the vehicle's midpoint, over the front axle. This affects steering feel and braking response more noticeably than a bed-mounted setup and should be factored into driving adjustments.
Mounting over the bed is the most flexible approach for the EDGE range. Load is supported through the bed structure rather than the hardtop, so the 45 kg OEM cab roof-rack limit does not govern the bed-mounted installation. Properly rated bed crossbars or support bars are the standard solution and can make Horizon Mini, Explore One and Horizon
One viable candidates when their dynamic capacity, spacing and mounting geometry are suitable.
The Gladiator's nominal load-bed length is approximately 153 cm. Horizon Mini's 150 cm closed length is therefore particularly well matched to the bed. Explore One (220 cm) and Horizon One (210 cm) are longer than the bed, extending about 67 cm and 57 cm beyond it; both remain viable bed-mount candidates where a properly rated crossbar/support system provides suitable support spacing and mounting geometry.
Several Gladiator-specific bed-support systems are available, ranging from crossbar-style solutions to taller adjustable racks and full cargo systems. The correct choice depends on the required dynamic capacity, bar spacing, tent mounting geometry and whether additional equipment needs to be carried.
For many Gladiator owners, a canopy is the main way to carry a rooftop tent over the bed. A canopy closes the bed, turning it into lockable, weather-protected storage, while the tent sits on the canopy roof. Compared with an open bed rack such as an A-frame, this gives two levels of usable space: secure storage inside the bed and the tent above it.
Many canopies on the market are built for the Gladiator, and most are designed to carry a rooftop tent, typically via integrated roof rails and crossbars. As examples, the RSI SmartCap EVO for the Gladiator is rated at 150 kg dynamic and 350 kg static, and the Alu-Cab Contour canopy for the Gladiator is listed with a 150 kg dynamic rating. With a 150 kg dynamic rating, all three EDGE tents, Horizon Mini (65 kg), Explore One (70 kg) and Horizon One (90 kg), stay within the canopy's limit together with a pair of crossbars.
When choosing a canopy, check its published dynamic rating, its roof-rail or crossbar compatibility, and that the rated load covers the tent plus crossbars. The canopy's own weight also counts against the vehicle's payload: steel canopies such as the RSI SmartCap weigh around 130 kg, while aluminium canopies such as the Alu-Cab Contour weigh around 56–62 kg.
The 45 kg figure in the Jeep Gladiator owner's manual is the total permissible load on the cab roof with a luggage rack installed — rack weight included. Even the lightest EDGE Overland tent, the Horizon Mini at 65 kg, exceeds that figure on its own, so the arithmetic does not work on standard hardtop crossbars or a gutter-mount rack for any EDGE Overland hardshell tent.
Structurally reinforced aftermarket cab systems can transfer load through stronger vehicle structure rather than relying solely on the hardtop, but their capacity must be assessed according to the system manufacturer's rating and installation requirements. For bed-mounted setups, the 45 kg OEM cab roof-rack figure does not govern the installation; use a bed crossbar/support system with sufficient dynamic capacity and suitable mounting geometry. Always verify the relevant vehicle and mounting-system documentation before installation.
Gutter-mount systems attach to the hardtop rain gutters and carry all load through the fibreglass panels. The Front Runner standard Slimline II for the Gladiator JT (954 × 1475 mm, 24.9 kg installed) is the most common gutter-mount option. With the rack's own weight already using more than half of the 45 kg OEM limit, there is no practical load budget for any EDGE Overland hardshell tent on a gutter-mount cab setup. This system is better suited to lighter accessories.
Structurally reinforced Gladiator cab systems are available in different forms, including full platform solutions and reinforced crossbar systems. The key requirement is not a specific rack brand or platform, but a mounting system whose manufacturer explicitly rates it for the complete travelling load and whose bar spacing and mounting geometry suit the tent. For EDGE, Horizon Mini is the cleanest cab-mount candidate. A full platform is the second option, useful where additional roof-level cargo is required.
For a rooftop tent alone, properly rated crossbars or bed-support bars are the standard starting point and are generally lighter and simpler than a full platform rack. The selected system must support the tent's travelling weight and provide suitable mounting geometry. A roof rack, platform or canopy is the second option: consider it when no suitable crossbars are available, when the available crossbars are not rated for the tent's weight, or when you also want to carry additional equipment. A canopy is the alternative for owners who want to close the bed and gain secure storage beneath the tent (see Canopy Mounting above).
Verdict: Hard-shell rooftop tents are a strong fit for the Gladiator when the mounting system is matched to the installation. For cab mounting, Horizon Mini is the cleanest EDGE option on a structurally reinforced crossbar system. For bed mounting, Horizon Mini, Explore One and Horizon One can all be viable with properly rated crossbars/support bars or a canopy with a suitable dynamic rating and suitable mounting geometry. Explore One's 18 cm closed profile is especially attractive for owners prioritising a lower travelling profile.

The Horizon Mini is a small rooftop tent (150 × 120 cm closed, 65 kg) and the cleanest EDGE Overland fit for the Gladiator. For cab mounting, its compact footprint and lower weight make it the strongest candidate on a structurally reinforced crossbar system. Over the bed, its 150 cm closed length closely matches the Gladiator's nominal 153 cm bed. It opens to a 230 × 145 cm sleeping area for two adults.
The Explore One (220 × 145 cm closed, 18 cm height, 70 kg) is a rooftop tent for 2-3 persons and a strong bed-mount option for Gladiator builds where a low travelling profile matters. Its closed shell is longer than the 153 cm bed, so it should be installed on a properly rated bed crossbar or support system with suitable bar spacing and mounting geometry.
The Horizon One (210 × 125 cm closed, 90 kg) is a rooftop tent for 4 persons and the largest and heaviest EDGE option considered here; it is best positioned as a bed-mounted solution. At 90 kg, the supporting system needs sufficient dynamic capacity for the tent and its mounting hardware.
The European Gladiator diesel is a large, heavy pickup, with European technical data listing approximately 2,360 kg kerb weight. That size is noticeable on tight Alpine hairpins, narrow forest roads and in historic European city centres. The longer wheelbase adds stability on faster roads but also increases the turning space required on technical routes.
Adding a rooftop tent and its supporting crossbars or rack raises the centre of gravity. For cab-mount setups, the load sits farther forward; for bed-mounted setups it is carried over or toward the rear axle. In both cases, allow more margin for braking and cornering, reduce speed on rough tracks and re-check mounting hardware periodically. Where a full rack is not otherwise needed, using a lighter properly rated crossbar/support system also avoids adding unnecessary weight high on the vehicle.
Any rooftop tent installation adds mass and aerodynamic drag, so motorway fuel consumption can increase. The effect depends on speed, tent profile and the rest of the build rather than on the tent alone. A low-profile hard-shell design can help limit unnecessary frontal area.
Can you put a rooftop tent on a Jeep Gladiator?
Yes. The Gladiator JT can support rooftop-tent setups over the cab or over the bed when the mounting system is correctly specified. Over the cab, Horizon Mini is the recommended EDGE tent on a structurally reinforced crossbar system; over the bed, all three EDGE tents can be considered on properly rated bed crossbars.
Was the Jeep Gladiator sold in Europe?
Yes — from 2021 until the end of 2023. Jeep sold the Gladiator across Europe exclusively with the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6 and 8-speed automatic, in Sport, Overland, 80th Anniversary, and Launch Edition trims, ending with the FarOut Final Edition. It was discontinued in Europe as part of Jeep's electrification strategy. A significant number remain in circulation.
What is the Jeep Gladiator's dynamic roof load rating?
For the standard hardtop roof-rack load path, Jeep documentation gives a maximum total roof-rack load of 45 kg, including the crossbars. That means an ordinary hardtop/gutter-mounted crossbar setup does not provide sufficient OEM load allowance for a 65–90 kg EDGE hard-shell tent. Structurally reinforced aftermarket systems that transfer load differently must instead be assessed according to their own manufacturer ratings and installation requirements.
Why can't I mount a tent across both the cab and the bed?
The Gladiator's cab and bed are separate structures mounted on the same ladder frame. Under off-road articulation, the frame twists and the two assemblies move slightly relative to each other. A rigid structure spanning both — a tent base, a long rack platform, a full-length awning — will be subjected to repeated differential movement. Over time this stresses and cracks the rigid structure. Mount on cab only, or bed only.
Which EDGE Overland tent fits the Jeep Gladiator cab roof?
The Horizon Mini (150 × 120 cm closed, 65 kg) is the cleanest EDGE candidate for cab mounting because of its compact footprint and lower weight. It should be paired with a structurally reinforced crossbar/support system that is specifically rated for the complete installation. Explore One and Horizon One are better positioned as bed-mounted options.
Do all EDGE Overland tents fit the Gladiator bed?
All three EDGE tents can be viable bed-mount candidates when the selected crossbar/support system has sufficient dynamic capacity and suitable mounting geometry. Horizon Mini is the cleanest physical match for the 153 cm bed. Explore One and Horizon One are longer than the bed, so bar spacing and mounting geometry need particular attention. All three can also be mounted on a canopy whose dynamic rating covers the tent and crossbars.
Cab mount or bed mount — which is better?
Both approaches can make sense. Cab mounting preserves the Gladiator's load bed and pairs most naturally with the compact Horizon Mini when a suitably rated reinforced support system is used. Bed mounting offers the broadest EDGE choice, with all three tents available on properly rated bed crossbars or on a canopy, which also turns the bed into closed, lockable storage.
