The Jeep Grand Cherokee has been sold in Europe in one form or another since 1993, and across four generations it has built a genuine reputation as a comfortable, capable overlanding platform. It is not a body-on-frame expedition truck, and it is not the simplest vehicle to work on in the field. What it is, in its later generations especially, is a well-rounded unibody SUV with enough 4x4 hardware to take on serious terrain and enough interior space to travel comfortably. Fitting a rooftop tent is a natural step for many Grand Cherokee owners, and all three EDGE Overland hard-shell tents can be mounted on it using properly rated crossbars.
This guide covers the four European-market Grand Cherokee generations — WJ/WG, WK/WH, WK2, and WL — with vehicle dimensions, generation-specific roof-load guidance, crossbar and roof rack guidance, and a clear tent compatibility assessment for each generation. If you are ready to buy a hardshell rooftop tent for your Grand Cherokee, read through the generation-specific sections below before selecting a model.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee can accommodate all three EDGE Overland hard-shell rooftop tents, mounted as standard on properly rated crossbars. Horizon Mini remains the lightest and most compact option at 65 kg; Explore One weighs 70 kg and Horizon One 90 kg. EDGE Overland customers run many Grand Cherokees with Horizon One installed.
The Grand Cherokee's appeal for overlanding is consistent across all four generations: comfortable on road, genuinely capable off it, available with diesel powertrains in several European generations, and large enough to carry meaningful gear. For rooftop-tent fitment, all three EDGE tents are compatible; verify the exact vehicle, roof-rail configuration and crossbar rating rather than apply one roof-load figure to the entire model line.
The WJ was produced at Magna Steyr in Graz for the European market (sold as the WG). It was available with diesel engines — the 2.7-litre Mercedes-Benz CRD and the 3.1-litre VM Motori TD — which made it a practical overlanding platform for long-distance European travel. Its conventional factory roof rails make it the most straightforward Grand Cherokee generation for crossbar installation.
If you also want a roof rack, Front Runner produces a WJ-specific Slimline II rack at 196.4 cm long and 125.5 cm wide. Drilling may be required depending on configuration.
The WK (sold in Europe as the WH) is 4,740 mm long and introduced independent front suspension. The European 3.0-litre CRD diesel made it a capable and fuel-efficient overlanding platform. Tent fitment commonly uses the factory longitudinal rails, so properly rated vehicle-specific crossbars are the standard solution. Crossbar capacities vary by system, which makes exact year, rail type and vehicle roof-load documentation important.
The WK2 is the best-balanced Grand Cherokee for European overlanding — stiffer body structure than the WK, the 3.0-litre EcoDiesel V6, and the most mature aftermarket ecosystem of any Grand Cherokee generation.
Where more capacity is needed than standard crossbars provide, crossbars with a higher load rating or a vehicle-specific roof rack can be used. The Offroad Animal WK2 system, for example, uses structural mounting rails and publishes a 120 kg dynamic / 240 kg static rating.
The WL is the current fifth-generation Grand Cherokee and uses a newer integrated roof-rail arrangement. Vehicle-specific crossbars are the standard solution, and roof racks with higher published dynamic ratings are also available for suitable WL configurations.
A 68 kg roof-rack figure does appear in Grand Cherokee documentation, notably US-market owner's manuals, where it applies to the factory luggage-rack arrangement. It should not, however, be presented as one verified dynamic roof-load rating that automatically governs WJ/WG, WK/WH, WK2 and WL in every configuration. Roof architecture, rails and available support systems differ by generation, so the exact European vehicle documentation and the rating of the selected crossbars must be checked together.
For standard crossbar installations, calculate the travelling roof load as the tent plus the crossbars and mounting hardware and compare it with both the vehicle-specific allowance and the crossbar rating. A pair of crossbars adds only a few kilograms, and with Explore One the ladder can be removed and carried separately, saving roughly 2–3 kg. A very small overshoot should therefore not automatically be treated as incompatibility, but the vehicle and crossbar limits must still be respected.
Properly rated, vehicle-specific crossbars are the preferred mounting solution on every Grand Cherokee generation. Use a vehicle-specific system whose published capacity, bar spacing and mounting geometry suit the selected EDGE Overland tent, and verify the vehicle's own roof/rail allowance separately. A roof rack can be chosen when no suitable crossbars are available, when the available crossbars are not rated for the tent's weight, or when you also want to carry other gear on the roof, but it is not required simply to mount a rooftop tent.
Verdict: A hard-shell EDGE tent is a strong match for the Grand Cherokee, and all three models are compatible.

The Horizon Mini (150 × 120 cm closed, 65 kg) is the lightest and most compact rooftop tent option and offers the greatest weight margin. Explore One (220 × 145 cm closed, 70 kg) suits the Grand Cherokee's long roof, and its removable ladder can be carried separately while driving. Horizon One (210 × 125 cm closed, 90 kg) offers the largest sleeping area, for up to 4 people.
All Grand Cherokee generations are tall unibody SUVs. Adding a rooftop tent and rack raises the centre of gravity on a vehicle that already sits noticeably higher than a standard passenger car. Increased sensitivity to crosswinds, more deliberate steering input on side slopes, longer braking distances under load, and reduced agility at higher speeds are all expected. Reduce motorway speed, increase following distances, and take exposed ridgelines and mountain passes with more care than you would unloaded.
The WK2 and WL are the better long-distance touring choices when fully loaded, with modern suspension geometry that manages dynamic loads well when the rack distributes weight correctly. The WJ and WK are older platforms where suspension condition, factory rail integrity, and overall vehicle age matter more.
Fuel consumption can increase with any rooftop-tent installation because of additional mass and aerodynamic drag. Lower-profile hard-shell tents can help limit unnecessary frontal area, while using appropriately rated crossbars instead of a roof rack can also reduce supporting-system weight. Check mounting torque after the initial installation period and periodically during rough-road travel.
Can you put a rooftop tent on a Jeep Grand Cherokee?
Yes. All three EDGE Overland hard-shell tents — Horizon Mini, Explore One and Horizon One — are compatible with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, mounted as standard on properly rated crossbars.
What is the Jeep Grand Cherokee's dynamic roof load rating?
There is no single 68 kg figure that should be applied automatically to every European Grand Cherokee generation and configuration. The 68 kg figure comes from US-market owner's manuals and applies to the factory luggage-rack arrangement. For a European vehicle, check the kg figure in the European owner's manual and the rating of the selected crossbars.
Which EDGE Overland tent fits the Jeep Grand Cherokee?
All three. Horizon Mini (65 kg) is the lightest option, Explore One (70 kg) has the lowest closed height, and Horizon One (90 kg) offers the most sleeping space. The right choice depends mainly on how many people will sleep in the tent.
Are crossbars suitable for a Grand Cherokee rooftop tent setup?
Yes. Crossbars are the standard mounting solution, as long as the vehicle documentation and the crossbar rating both support the complete travelling load. A roof rack is the second option, mainly when suitable crossbars are not available or you want to carry other gear on the roof.
Which Grand Cherokee generation is best for rooftop tent use?
The WK2 is particularly attractive for rooftop-tent builds because it has a mature aftermarket. The WL is equally suitable, and the WJ/WG and WK/WH are also strong candidates with crossbars on the factory rails.
