Transform your Patrol Y60, Y61, or Y62 into the ultimate expedition vehicle. We offer a range of Nissan Patrol rooftop tent solutions suited to each model's roof load capacity and mounting systems - from classic gutter-mount setups on older Patrols to fixed-point installations on the modern Y62.
The Nissan Patrol is a legend among off-road vehicles. The Y60 and Y61 models in particular are renowned for their near-indestructible build quality and exceptional off-road capability. This combination of a robust chassis, high suspension travel, and - on older models - a classic rain gutter system makes the Patrol one of the most capable bases for a rooftop tent.
The high suspension and solid build also mean that additional roof weight affects handling far less than it would on lighter vehicles such as the Pathfinder or X-Trail.

The Nissan Patrol Y60 and Y61 are among the most capable platforms for rooftop tent mounting due to their heavy-duty frame construction and rain gutter system.
When fitted with a gutter-mounted rack, the dynamic roof load on these models is generally around 100 kg while driving. Note that this figure applies specifically to gutter-mount configurations - Y61 variants fitted with factory roof rails rather than a gutter-mount rack may have a lower rated limit, and the figure on the B-pillar sticker or in the owner's manual should be treated as the definitive reference for your specific vehicle.
The Y62 does not feature rain gutters and instead uses roof rails or fixed roof mounting points. For this generation, a purpose-built platform rack or a heavy-duty rail-mounted system is recommended - particularly for heavier hard-shell tents - to ensure proper load distribution across the roof structure.
Verdict: For the Nissan Patrol, particularly when used for extended overlanding or regular off-road travel, a hard-shell rooftop tent is the more practical choice. The aluminum construction withstands trail debris and vibration more effectively, setup is faster, and the aerodynamic profile reduces fuel consumption and wind noise on long drives.
All EDGE Overland hard-shell rooftop tents are compatible with the Nissan Patrol, each suited to a different configuration or use case.
The compact rooftop tent model is the most compact option in the EDGE Overland range. At 65 kg and with a closed footprint of 150 × 120 × 25 cm, it is well suited to Y60 builds and pickup-bed configurations where roof length is limited. Despite its compact closed dimensions, it opens to a full 230 × 145 cm sleeping area - accommodating two to three people comfortably - and includes a 5 cm dual-compound mattress with both a firm and a soft side.
The rooftop tent for 2-3 persons model weighs 70 kg and closes to 220 × 145 × 18 cm - the lowest closed profile in the range at just 18 cm. This slim height is a practical advantage for Patrol owners who need garage clearance or prefer to keep the roof profile low when driving on trails. It opens to a 210 × 135 cm sleeping area with a 7 cm dual-compound mattress - the thickest in the EDGE Overland lineup - and sets up in one to two minutes.
The rooftop tent for 4 persons model is the largest option in the range, offering a 230 × 205 cm sleeping area - sufficient for up to four people. It weighs 90 kg and closes to 210 × 125 × 25 cm. The Horizon One is the right choice for Y61 owners and those running a dedicated bed rack configuration where the full 90 kg weight is within the rated system limit - providing a spacious and well-equipped base for extended family expeditions, with integrated LED lighting, 12V and USB charging, and a 5 cm dual-compound mattress.
The Y60 and Y61 feature pronounced rain gutters that make roof rack installation more straightforward than on gutterless modern vehicles. No drilling into the roof structure is required.
The Y62 does not feature rain gutters. For a rooftop tent installation, a platform rack secured to the vehicle's fixed roof mounting points is the recommended approach, as this distributes the load into the vehicle structure rather than relying on the roof panel or rail system alone. Rack solutions from Front Runner Outfitters and Rhino-Rack offer Y62-compatible options.
Note that the Y62's roof load limit is inclusive of the rack weight itself. Always confirm the rated capacity of your specific rack system's manufacturer before installation, to be sure compatibility is maintained.

Choose the EDGE Overland rooftop tent that matches your Patrol generation and use case:
What is the roof load capacity of the Nissan Patrol Y60 and Y61?
The permissible dynamic roof load - while driving - is generally around 100 kg on Y60 and Y61 models. Always confirm the specific figures in your owner’s manual or registration documents, as values can vary by market and specification.
Can a rooftop tent be mounted on the original crossbars or roof rails?
On Y60 and Y61 models, the factory rain gutters allow for gutter-mount rack systems that can support the weight of a rooftop tent when correctly installed. On the Y62, factory roof rails are generally rated only for light loads such as bicycles or luggage. For a tent in the 65–90 kg range, a purpose-built platform rack secured to the fixed roof mounting points is strongly recommended. Roof rail-only installations are generally not advised for heavier tents on any generation.
Does a rooftop tent significantly increase fuel consumption on the Patrol?
Yes. A rooftop tent adds aerodynamic resistance, and the Patrol's tall body profile already produces considerable drag. With a hard-shell tent, the additional fuel consumption is estimated at approximately +0.5–1 L per 100 km. Soft-shell tents produce greater drag due to their larger profile when closed, with estimated figures of +1–2 L per 100 km. Actual figures vary with driving speed, rack configuration, and tent model.
Is a rooftop tent suitable for the Nissan Patrol Y62?
Yes. The Y62 can support a rooftop tent when a suitable rack system is used. Because the Y62 does not feature rain gutters, a platform rack secured to the vehicle's fixed roof mounting points is the recommended approach for heavier tents. This ensures the load is distributed into the vehicle structure rather than concentrated on the roof panel or rail system.
