For Loránd Pávai, EDGE Overland started long before there was a company behind the name. It began with a passion for camping, off-roading and spending time in places where the road — quite literally — ends. Like many good product stories, it also began with a problem.
While looking for a rooftop tent for his own adventures, Loránd found that the products available on the market either didn't quite meet his requirements or came at a price that was difficult to justify. He was looking for something that was well designed, durable and practical, but also reasonably priced — a product that offered genuinely high quality without pushing the price beyond the reach of most outdoor enthusiasts. With more than 20 years of experience in product development, his natural response was not to compromise, but to build one himself.
What started as a personal project soon attracted attention. Friends, fellow campers and people from the off-road community saw the tent, tried it and began offering feedback. Their interest made Loránd realise that the problems he had been trying to solve for himself were shared by many other outdoor enthusiasts. That first rooftop tent — an early version of what would later become the Explore One — gradually evolved from a one-off solution into a product, and EDGE Overland was born.
Since then, the range has grown to include several rooftop tent and car awning models, but the approach behind them has remained much the same: design, build, test, use, listen and improve. At the same time, the principle behind that very first tent continues to influence every new product: finding the right balance between quality, functionality, durability and price. Rather than adding cost for the sake of it, the focus is on materials, engineering and features that make a real difference in everyday use. The goal is not simply to create premium products, but to create products that offer genuinely high value for money — equipment built to perform at a high level while remaining sensibly priced.
Loránd is closely involved in virtually every part of EDGE Overland. Alongside leading the company, he supervises production, sales and marketing, works with dealers and partners, and remains deeply involved in developing future products and refining existing ones. For him, product development does not happen only behind a desk or inside a workshop. He camps with the equipment, travels with it and experiences the same practical challenges as the people EDGE Overland designs its products for. How quickly a tent can be set up after a long day on the road, how an awning behaves in poor weather, or which small details become important after days of continuous use are things that are difficult to fully understand from drawings and specifications alone.
That first-hand experience is an essential part of the development process. It is complemented by feedback from collaborators and experienced adventurers who use EDGE Overland equipment in demanding environments and often push it far beyond what most customers would encounter during a typical camping trip. Their experiences provide valuable insights into what works, what could work better and where the next improvement might come from.
This reflects one of Loránd's core beliefs about product development: there is no such thing as a truly finished product. There is always a detail that can be refined, a feature that can become more useful, a material or component that can perform better, or a completely new idea worth exploring. Sometimes an improvement is substantial; other times it may be a small detail that simply makes a product easier or more enjoyable to use. But those details matter. It is a philosophy Loránd has carried throughout his career and one that continues to shape EDGE Overland year after year, with every new generation of a product becoming an opportunity to make it better than the one before it.
But his interest in the outdoor industry goes beyond creating products. Loránd believes that good equipment is most valuable when people understand how to choose it, use it and get the most out of it. Drawing on more than two decades of product-development experience, as well as years of hands-on camping and off-road travel, he regularly shares what he has learned through the EDGE Overland blog.
His goal is not simply to talk about products or promote a particular piece of equipment, but to help people better understand rooftop tents, awnings, camping equipment and the practical considerations behind them — from materials and construction to usability, maintenance and real-world performance. The better informed people are, the better decisions they can make about the equipment they take with them into the outdoors. That exchange of knowledge also works in the other direction: questions, experiences and feedback from customers, dealers, collaborators and fellow travellers regularly find their way back into the development process and help shape future ideas and improvements.
For Loránd, EDGE Overland is as much about knowledge and continuous learning as it is about equipment. Every trip brings new experience, every piece of feedback is a chance to learn, and every product can be improved. This mindset, together with his passion for the outdoors, more than 20 years of product-development experience and commitment to creating high-quality equipment at a reasonable price, continues to shape both Loránd's work and the future of EDGE Overland.
